Root Canal in Bakersfield
A root canal is a dental procedure that involves surgical removal of badly damaged pulp and nerve from the tooth. A damaged pulp can cause sensitivity to cold and heat, swelling, unbearable pain, excessive enamel and dentine wear and gum disease.
What happens during the root canal procedure?
Before anything, your surgeon will examine your tooth and the tissue surrounding it to assess the extent of the damage. This will be helpful in determining if the tooth is healthy enough for such an invasive procedure. A local anesthesia will be applied to numb the tooth before the procedure begins.
Once you are numb and ready for the procedure, a rubber dam will be placed on your tooth to prevent oral fluids from reaching the operative area.
A dental drill will be used to create an access hole on the tooth. Your surgeon will use this hole to access the pulp and the nerve in the root canals. Special instruments are used to pull out the pulp contents.
The emptied insides of the tooth will then be washed clean to remove any leftover pulp debris.
Next, the tooth chamber is filled using a special filling material called gutta percha. The access hole is then sealed using composite resin or some other filling material.
The occlusion will be checked to ensure the treated tooth doesn't suffer excessive bite pressure from the opposite jaw.
